The Film Business – Law Talk

What is this Thing: What is Work Made For Hire?
Things Type: Education > Understanding copyright in film
Link: http://www.scriptmag.com/features/legally-speaking-depends-work-made-for-hire
Notes: Many artists don’t care about the nitty gritty business details, which is a huge mistake. It is important as an artist to have a general understanding of copyright law so you know to protect your work of art.

Equipment

What is this Thing: Canon C300 – Review?
Things Type: Equipment Review > Canon C300
Link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CBdbRex_FPM
Notes: I thought it would be good to post an old review of the Canon C300 since Canon is rumored to be releasing the next version (C300 Mark II) of this model during the NAB 2015 show in April. The big rumor is that the new version of C300 will be a 4K camera. the good news is that Canon is trying to move all the old inventory and a C300 Mark I can be had for about $ 6,500 bucks – pretty damn good price. But, if your mind is set on 4K and you don’t need it right now just wait a few weeks and after NAB I’m sure there will be plenty of new 4K at lower price equipment to be had.

Visual FX

What is this Thing: Free Visual Effects & Motion Graphics Software
Things Type: Post Production > Visual FXs
Link: https://www.blackmagicdesign.com/products/fusion
Notes: They say free means crippled. Not so with Black Magic Design productions, such as Resolve (color correcting and grading) BMD purchased eyeon Fusion and has provided a free version as they did with Resolve. I haven’t used Fusion yet, but trust me, I’m going to give it a spin. Here’s a short video that discusses the product – https://vimeo.com/107887538

Cinematography History

What is this Thing: Kubrick’s Lenses
Link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w_PIqg449is

Film Sites

What is this Thing: r3Load.Net
 Things Type: B-Roll and Stuff
Link: http://r3load.net/jjstartrek.html
Notes: Cool little site where they have lots of B-roll from big films. Now, they say once you see a ton of B-roll it’s all the same – maybe. But, watching B-roll might give some insight on things you can do on your sets.

Music Video of The Week

What is this Thing: Herschel’s MV Pick of the Week
Things Type: Music Video
Link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3jA13XYlWHc
Notes: This week’s music video is off the beaten path. While listening to Audioslave I tried finding the I am the Highway. I really like the song, but interesting I don’t thingk Audioslave ever made a video. But this girl put together a music video and I really like what she did. I don’t know what movie she used for her imagery, but if you look at the cuts she used it’s very representative of the song and the video has over 800 thousand hits. Just goes to show you that the emotional scenes of this video hit the right mark. Something to be cognizant when creating your own video.

To Review:

Just keeping a list of things I want to review before really posting them.

Onset Audio – Lav Mics

What is this Thing: How to place a Lavaliere Mic on Talent
Things Type: Tutorial > Onset placement of Lav Mic.
Link: Vimeo: 118841933

Music Video of The Week

What is this Thing: Herschel’s MV Pick of the Week
Things Type: Music Video
Link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=djV11Xbc914&index=18&list=PLeD2_km2-al8FxJDDXmzzsrkEByFYpy1J
Notes: I’ll admit that posting these music videos of the week shows my age. I’m a kid of the 80’s when MTV revolutionized the music business. Yea, the 80’s were full of big hair and weird costumes. I’ll admit that I like all types of music and this week’s MV of the week comes from the 80’s and pop music. What I really liked about A-Ha’s Take On Me video is that it’s was heavy on a story component AND they mixed in cartooning with live action. It just had that Tarantino Kill Bill cut-away feel before Tarantino made it cool… You can curse and make fun of the 80’s and MTV, but it sure is fun too look back and realize that it was a time when Music and Video collided to create a new art form.

Things Type: Fan Film/Project
Link: http://www.startrekcontinues.com
Notes: I sent and email out to my friends and the title of the email was “Fan film gone all crazy and shit.” I’m not exaggerating here. The team that is doing this has nailed the look and feel of the original series. They’ve even managed to get some famous actors from the Star Trek world to participate. Worth looking into!!

Things Type: Lens Equipment

Notes:
Let’s face it… aspiring Cinematographers realize at some point that to get really great images, you have to have 1) skills 2) a camera and 3) great optics! Bumping up to the cine-primes is a big cost – more than or equal to the cost of a really good camera! Unlike cameras, the lens’s will be a lifetime investment. Matthew Duclos reviews cine-primes for the beginner! 😉Cooke Mini S-4i • Zeiss CP.2 Compact Prime • Canon CN-E Prime

Notes: Good 8 minute video that covers the blend mode in Premiere Pro. The techniques covered might help you recover an over-exposed shot. No, I did not just say “fix it in post.” What I said is that IF you need to fix it in post, this technique “might” save you – might.

Lighting Equipment

What is this Thing: LED Light Ribbon
Things Type: Equipment
Link: http://store.litegear.com/default.asp
imageNotes: I have purchased LED light ribbons in the past, but haven’t used them on a shoot. This site sells higher end LED ribbons – found this site through DP Shane Hurlbut’s website. These ribbons are pricy compared to the LED light ribbons I’ve purchased off Amazon. Without testing I don’t know if they are worth the extra cash – I’m sure they are useful , else Shane’s team wouldn’t use them.

Things Type: Education – Sound Acquisition On Set
Link: http://vimeo.com/116200417
Notes: Sound Designer/Mixer Jonah Guelzo discuss on set sound acquisition. Get the sound at the source instead of trying to fix it in post. Good information here, but looks like the information was sponsored by Rhode. I have Rhode equipment and have never had any issues.

What is this Thing: Wireless Transmitter & Receiver.
Things Type: Equipment – Wireless Audio
Link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?x-yt-cl=84359240&v=uvtpkFhWX0A&x-yt-ts=1421782837
Notes: Rode announced a new Wireless audio product using 2.4GHz transmission technology. The price on B&H is $ 399.00. HH’s take: I have several Sennheiser wireless transmission and receiving products and haven’t had any issues, but they start at around $ 629.00 for a transmitter/receiver pair. I have Rode microphone products and haven’t had any issues. I wouldn’t rule out 2.4Ghz technology, just need to test it in a real-world environment before you purchase.

Color Correcting/Color Grading

What is this Thing: The best order of operation for Color Grading & Color Correcting
Things Type: Color Grading and Color Correcting
Link: http://noamkroll.com/the-best-order-of-operations-for-color-grading-why-it-makes-all-the-difference/
Notes: Noam Kroll discusses the best order of operations for color grading. HH’s take – over the past few years I’ve had to learn how to do color grading and correcting out of necessity since we didn’t have budget for a dedicated colorist. At first I color corrected and graded to fix stupid shooting errors. After getting somewhat functional, you find that color correcting and grading actually gives you another opportunity to add life to the footage. In the future I hope to get on projects that have budget for a dedicated colorist – trust me, they are worth every penny.
