This Week’s Things: 4/20/2015

The North American Broadcaster’s 2015 Show has come and gone and there are tons of announcements and new gear and software that every filmmaker needs! I’ve been real busy so it will take me a while to catch up the blog on everything I reviewed.

Equipment

What is this Thing: Aerial Platform
Things Type: Aerial platform for video
Linkhttp://hexoplus.com/
imageNotes: I have a DJI Phantom 2 + GoPro 4. I’ve been flying it now for about six months. I’ve gotten better and better at flying and controlling the quad-copter so I know there’s a great place for the tool in the filmmaking tool-kit. It seems that every month there’s a new “Drone” being planned, crowd-sourced or released by a major company (GoPro). The cursed problem with Technology is that once a market is established there’s comes a lot of options. Figuring out what to buy and when to buy becomes a tough proposition. Here’s a link to a new “Drone” that will be released in September of 2015.

What is this Thing: Lens
Things Type: 100mm Samyang/Rokinon Cine-Style Lens
 Linkhttp://nofilmschool.com/2015/04/samyang-just-announced-affordable-cine-style-macro-lensimage
Notes: I have a Rokinon 85mm Cine-Style lens and I’m happy with it, especially for the price. If you’re budget conscious these lens’ are worth the money.

Cinematography

Notes: Impact D1000 Dimmer.

Music Video of The Week

What is this Thing: Herschel’s MV Pick of the Week
Things Type: Music Video
Link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XHg-PR0Q4BQ&feature=player_embedded
Notes: While doing lunch with a friend he showed me a music video that was directed, shot and shot by a friend of his. Watching it at lunch peaked my interest. The MV is totally something I wouldn’t do. However, it is so 21st Century and has a lot of production put into it. Again, it’s so not what I would do, but hey, there’s a big crowd of people that are into this type of material. As for the technical’s of the video – I give it a solid 8.8. I love the dialogue by one of the bad members at the end of the video.

The Film Business – Law Talk

What is this Thing: What is Work Made For Hire?
Things Type: Education > Understanding copyright in film
Link: http://www.scriptmag.com/features/legally-speaking-depends-work-made-for-hire
Notes: Many artists don’t care about the nitty gritty business details, which is a huge mistake. It is important as an artist to have a general understanding of copyright law so you know to protect your work of art.

Equipment

What is this Thing: Canon C300 – Review?
Things Type: Equipment Review > Canon C300
Link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CBdbRex_FPM
Notes: I thought it would be good to post an old review of the Canon C300 since Canon is rumored to be releasing the next version (C300 Mark II) of this model during the NAB 2015 show in April. The big rumor is that the new version of C300 will be a 4K camera. the good news is that Canon is trying to move all the old inventory and a C300 Mark I can be had for about $ 6,500 bucks – pretty damn good price. But, if your mind is set on 4K and you don’t need it right now just wait a few weeks and after NAB I’m sure there will be plenty of new 4K at lower price equipment to be had.

Visual FX

What is this Thing: Free Visual Effects & Motion Graphics Software
Things Type: Post Production > Visual FXs
Link: https://www.blackmagicdesign.com/products/fusion
Notes: They say free means crippled. Not so with Black Magic Design productions, such as Resolve (color correcting and grading) BMD purchased eyeon Fusion and has provided a free version as they did with Resolve. I haven’t used Fusion yet, but trust me, I’m going to give it a spin. Here’s a short video that discusses the product – https://vimeo.com/107887538

Cinematography History

What is this Thing: Kubrick’s Lenses
Link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w_PIqg449is
Notes: They say the lens is the heart of the image. In this 12 minute video Joe Dunton, BSC, goes through many of Kubrick’s favorite lenses.

Film Sites

What is this Thing: r3Load.Net
 Things Type: B-Roll and Stuff
Link: http://r3load.net/jjstartrek.html
Notes: Cool little site where they have lots of B-roll from big films. Now, they say once you see a ton of B-roll it’s all the same – maybe. But, watching B-roll might give some insight on things you can do on your sets.

Lighting

What is this Thing: What is negative fill?
Things Type: Tutorial > Negative Fill
Link: https://vimeo.com/122843323
Notes: Ryan Walters discusses negative fill – a good 5 minutes for anyone learning negative fill.

What is this Thing: Chineese Latern
Things Type: Equipment
Link: http://www.filmtools.com/ligdep/lighting-equipment/light-fixtures-kits/30whitpapchi.html
Notes: FilmTools.Com has a boatload of equipment and supplies.

What is this Thing: Light Dimmer
Things Type: Equipment
Link: http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/755346-REG/Impact_D_1000_D1000_1_000W_AC_Dimmer.html
Notes: Impact D1000 Dimmer.

Music Video of The Week

What is this Thing: Herschel’s MV Pick of the Week
Things Type: Music Video
Link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3jA13XYlWHc
Notes: This week’s music video is off the beaten path. While listening to Audioslave I tried finding the I am the Highway. I really like the song, but interesting I don’t thingk Audioslave ever made a video. But this girl put together a music video and I really like what she did. I don’t know what movie she used for her imagery, but if you look at the cuts she used it’s very representative of the song and the video has over 800 thousand hits. Just goes to show you that the emotional scenes of this video hit the right mark. Something to be cognizant when creating your own video.

To Review:

Just keeping a list of things I want to review before really posting them.

Cinematography

image What is this Thing: Focus Pulling
Things Type: Noam Kroll on focus pulling for the low budget filmmaker.
Link: http://www.premiumbeat.com/blog/3-hacks-shooting-without-a-focus-puller/
Notes: Focus pulling is an art by itself. A great focus pull makes your image look like it should. A bad focus pull makes your image look like shit. Noam gives three “hacks” for the low budget filmmaker.

Special FX

What is this Thing: Green Screen
Things Type: Tutorial > Green Screen
Link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OH8TWTt51W8&feature=player_detailpage
Notes: IYou can never watch too many tutorials on Green Screening until you have a flawless shot using a green screen. The Basic Filmmaker does a pretty darn good 23 minute tutorial. He also has a pretty darn good collection of tools needed and links to buy them. Now you don’t have any excuse not to do great green screen shooting!image

What is this Thing: LUTs – Look Up Table
 Things Type: Tutorial > LUTs

Link 3: http://www.premiumbeat.com/blog/understanding-luts-in-color-grading/
Link 4: http://www.premiumbeat.com/blog/color-grading-tutorial-luts-in-davinci-resolve/
Notes: Yes, it can be confusing to pick up all the technical jargon tossed around these days with video and film production. Take for instance the work “LUT”! If you ever get into the nitty-gritty job of color correcting and grading you’ll most likely have to deal with determining what LUT you want to use. Here are some links to learning more about LUTs. Link 1 is a 3 minute tutorial on what a LUT is and what it does. Link 1 is a product of 30 LUTs you can buy to use in the post production process. Link 3 is a blog that covers LUTs in more details and has a lot of resources that help you get started in using LUTs. Link 4 is about using LUTs in Davinci Resolve.

Music Video of The Week

What is this Thing: Herschel’s MV Pick of the Week
Things Type: Music Video
Link:https://vimeo.com/115180533
Notes: I’m really digging Ash von Chamier’s music videos. Of course it doesn’t hurt that he’s got a Sony FS700. I like his color gradings and it seems that he has a real good nack of picking artists that have good music. This is just another really good looking and sounding music video. Ash’s Vimeo channel is here – Ash von Chamier.

This Weeks “Things” – Week of 12/29/2014

Sorry this weeks “things” list is pretty long. I’m going back through email that I’ve sent out to fellow filmmakers and putting the good stuff in the blog for historical accuracy.

Hope you find something useful! And I’m putting some visual clues on the list so you can easily see what a link is associated to so you don’t have to read about “Cinematography” if your not into that…

Things Type: Multiple Disciplines
Time To Watch: 6:49
Link: http://revision3.com/filmriot/10-resources-for-filmmakers-online/
Notes: I’m a big fan of Film Riot (http://revision3.com/filmriot). Ryan and crew do a great job of entertaining and educating budget minded aspiring film makers. Film Riot recently did a year-end 10 Favorite Educational Resources on the Internet. The video is packed with websites that will make you a better film maker.

Of the 10 Educational Resources, these are the ones I already use:

I need to check these other ones out and post my thoughts…

Cinematography

What is this Thing: Robby Muller – Cinematography Master Class
Things Type: Cinematography
Time To Watch: 22:36
Link:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DqaL9so8CHQ#t=214
Notes: Lots to learn from this, both practical and relational between the DoP and Director. I like how Robby states he doesn’t shoot a project unless he has some attachment to the material. He doesn’t just shoot to shoot something.

What is this Thing: Shooting Green Screen Tips and Techniques
Things Type: Cinematography
Time To Watch: 4:37
Link:

Link:

What is this Thing: Editing Unbroken
Things Type: Editing
Link:
https://library.creativecow.net/wall_kylee/Editing-Unbroken_Squyres-Goldenberg/1
Notes: Co-editors of the film Unbroken, Tim Squyres and Billy Goldenberg discuss the ins and outs of co-editing a film. HH’s take – really interesting snippets on the editing process and how to get feedback during the process. I like the quotes:

Over time you get jaded about a scene and it’s easy to fool yourself. Often, your emotional responses the first time you see the footage and the first time you put it together are quite accurate.” He paused, laughing.”The other thing is to show it to people. If there’s a joke and nobody laughs, it doesn’t matter. It’s not funny. If they laugh, it’s working.

Strangely comforting that the screening process never becomes easier, even for Oscar-caliber editors.
