What’s New: Premiere Pro CC–June 2016 Update

People complained, a lot, when Adobe moved from a traditional “purchase” model to a “rent” slash “cloud” mode. People weren’t ready for the new mode of software ownership.

I didn’t like it either! However, I understood that software vendors needed to get to a more predictable financial model so I signed up for the unlimited Adobe Creative Cloud.

Fast forward two or so years and I can say I’m happy that Adobe moved to this software sales model. I feel that Adobe is actively adding great features to the product line-up and as a creative person I’m getting the value for my money.

For example, just the updates to Premiere Pro in the June release are pretty amazing. Yea, you might now use all the features, but the cool thing is that YOU CAN use them because they are there and you have access to the features.

Here’s a video on some of the new features:

What is this thing: Enough Coverage is Enough – Why shooting too much coverage can be a “bad thing”.
Article Link: http://www.premiumbeat.com/blog/why-shooting-too-much-coverage-is-bad/
Notes: In my experience as a DP I find that Directors who shoot way too much coverage do so because they are not prepared. Shooting too much coverage is usually done by inexperienced Directors during their “learning” projects. Don’t be a Dump-Truck Director. Get the coverage you need and know what coverage you need by preparing before you get onset.

What is this thing: How to Organize Your Digital Film Media
Article Link: http://www.premiumbeat.com/blog/how-to-organize-a-feature-film-edit-like-a-pro/
Notes: I have a friend who has the filmmaking “eye” yet he is the worse organizer of his digital media. Some artists just don’t have that attention to detail, especially while doing the edit. They are so concerned with getting the film edited the way they see it that the chaotic mess of the project doesn’t bother them. However, if you ever want to be an effective editor you need to learn how to organize your digital assets. Here’s an article that can help get you started.

Music Video of The Week

What is this Thing: Herschel’s MV Pick of the Week
Things Type: Music Video
Link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IZbN_nmxAGk
Notes: This week’s music video comes to us from a Brad Paisley and Alison Krauss song – Whiskey Lullaby. The problem with this music video is that the song is so strong in telling the story of two people who find love, loose love and eventually kill each other with alcohol in the grief of their breakup. If you’ve never listened to the song before watching the video, the video seems to be pretty good. But if you listened to the song before watching the video, it just doesn’t live up to the images in your mind. Ricky Shroder directed and starred in the music video. I just think he went safe with replicating what the song was saying with its images and the images he put on film. For me it teaches a lesson in music videos that if the song has strong visuals in the story telling, as a lot of country music videos do, then you have to approach the visual story telling differently or else the video will never live up to the song.

Let’s face it… aspiring Cinematographers realize at some point that to get really great images, you have to have 1) skills 2) a camera and 3) great optics! Bumping up to the cine-primes is a big cost – more than or equal to the cost of a really good camera! Unlike cameras, the lens’s will be a lifetime investment.
